Wedding videomaker at Staffarda Abbey
They get married and I have a birthday.
This is the story of Francesca and Simone, September 2, 2023, in Revello in the province of Cuneo. It was also my birthday. I hadn’t planned to celebrate it in one of the oldest Cistercian abbeys in Piedmont, with Alice Centolanza photography and an entire wedding that at a certain point started making me do a dance. Good things are often not planned.
The wedding at Staffarda Abbey: Francesca and Simone
The Abbey of Santa Maria di Staffarda is a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century, in Revello, in the province of Cuneo. It’s not a location in the modern sense of the word — it’s an authentic medieval complex, with the cloister, the chapter house, the refectory, and that Roman-Gothic architecture where stone and brick alternate in patterns that never tried to impress anyone. The Cistercians built to last, not to amaze. Maybe that’s why it’s so surprising.
Alice Centolanza usually photographs interiors and architecture. That day she was photographing people – but in a place made of vaults, arches and light coming in obliquely from the Romanesque windows, it was clear why they had called her. He knows how to read spaces. It knows where to put a person so that the space works for them, not against them. The result can be seen in Francesca and Simone’s film.
Revello, the Il Sigillo Restaurant and an unplanned birthday
In the evening the reception moved to the Il Sigillo restaurant, in Piazza Roma in Revello – a few minutes from the abbey, in the center of the town. Local cuisine, the real one, with products from the Cuneo plain and local wines. The kind of place that doesn’t need to decorate itself to feel special. As a wedding videographer at Staffarda Abbey, I didn’t expect to end up in the middle of the dance floor. Yet when the guests found out it was my birthday, things got out of hand in the nicest way possible — cake included, if I remember correctly. The marriage that begat another marriage. Some days have more stories than a single movie can contain.
