This is the story of Serena and Fabio, September 17, 2023, in Alessandria, Monferrato. Lucia Mondini was in charge of photography. Or at least, that’s what everyone said — because throughout the day I asked guests where Lucia was, and Lucia was right next to me. At one point the party had a catchphrase: someone shouted “Lucia!” and a laugh started. The La Pergola Gardens deserved a day like this.

The La Pergola Gardens are in Alessandria, in a position overlooking the Monferrato hills, and have more than three hundred years of history behind them. The villa is in Art Nouveau style, the gardens are Italian – with columns, balustrades, plane trees, cedars, magnolias – and that classic elegance that is a little out of time that certain places have when no one has tried to modernize them too much. There are four distinct areas, each with its own light and atmosphere: the Bossi Garden, the Aviary Garden, the Rose Garden, and the open panorama over the Monferrato vineyards.
Serena and Fabio had chosen well. A location that has its own character doesn’t need to be filled — it needs to be left to breathe. And September in Alexandria, with that already lower light and the colors starting to change, is one of the best times to film in a place like this.
Monferrato, September and the question of Lucia
Lucia Mondini and I often work together — we had already been to the Abbey of San Galgano in Tuscany and other situations, and we know each other enough to understand each other without talking too much. That day, however, I made a strategic mistake: I started asking the guests where Lucia was. The answer was always the same — he was next to me. But by now the mechanism had started. Throughout the evening, at random intervals, someone would shout “Lucia!” from the tables. She raised her hand. We laughed. We started again.
As a wedding videomaker at the La Pergola Gardens in Alessandria, I know that certain details don’t make it into the film – but they do enter the memory of those who were there, and of those who tell it later. This is one of those. You can recover it by watching the backstage video.
