We arrived in Chiusdino the day before the wedding, me and Lucia Mondini — the photographer with whom I shared this trip to Tuscany. We settled at the Agriturismo Casale San Galgano, a few minutes walk from the abbey, in that Val di Merse countryside which becomes silent in the evening in a way that is difficult to describe. The next morning I woke up before dawn.

I wanted to see the Abbey of San Galgano without anyone. Understanding how the light entered between the Cistercian arches when the sun was still low on the Sienese hills, when Chiusdino was still asleep. What I found at dawn, alone among those aisles open to the sky, is not easily forgotten. The honey-colored stone caught the first rays in a way that no closed room could ever return. I filmed for almost an hour. Those images then became the opening of Chiara and Paul’s film — the best way to describe a place is to get there before everything else arrives.
During the ceremony the naves of the abbey did what they do best: contain emotions without crushing them. Lucia worked silently next to me, with that ability to disappear and at the same time be everywhere. The Montesiepi Hermitage could be seen in the distance — the legend of the sword in the stone of San Galgano doesn’t need to be explained, as long as it’s in the frame.
Chiara and Paul’s wedding: the evening at Agriturismo Casale San Galgano
In the evening the banquet moved to the Antico Tempio restaurant, in the rooms of the Casale San Galgano farmhouse. True Tuscan cuisine, the one made with the products of the estate, in environments that have the same ancient feel as the abbey that can be glimpsed beyond the fields. It’s one of those places where the party comes alone. And indeed she came: at a certain point we were all on the dance floor, including Lucia and me. She – standing for ten hours with the camera – collapsed from cramps, amidst everyone’s laughter. It’s one of those moments that don’t end up in the film, but remain in the journey.
